Volunteers at Lake Humane Society are vital to the care and placement of the unwanted, injured, abandoned, and abused animals of Lake County. Without our volunteers, we would not be able to continue to care for, defend, protect, and find loving homes for the animals in need. We thank you for your interest in working alongside us in our lifesaving work as a volunteer. Our mission is not possible without you.
YOU Make the Difference
Our Volunteers
The volunteers of Lake Humane Society support our staff in the operation and care of the shelter facility and the homeless animals awaiting adoption. With hundreds of cats, dogs, rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, and other pets to care for at once, and our limited staff and resources, we are always seeking volunteers who have a passion for helping animals – and people – in need.
Current Volunteer Opportunities
The current volunteer opportunities we have available include: Cat Care & Cage Cleaning, Cat TLC, Dog Walking & TLC, Daily Maintenance Assistance, Offsite Event Representative, Foster Care, and more! Through these positions, you can assist in caring for our animals, improving the environment they live in, and representing Lake Humane Society to the community by promoting our programs and services. We also have various specialized roles for individuals with specific qualifications and skills.
Do you have a busy work or school schedule? There are still opportunities to get involved! Volunteer Dog Walkers and Cat Cage Cleaners are needed all-weekend long. Additionally, we are in need of Dog Walkers from 5-7 pm every day of the week. Weekend event volunteering also provides a great opportunity to get involved!
Volunteer Requirements
To become a volunteer here at LHS, you must be at least 16 years of age to volunteer in the various positions listed above. In order to volunteer with our dogs, at events, or in clerical roles, volunteers must be 18 years old. Due to the success and overwhelming participation of the youth volunteer program we are increasing the age. Volunteers ages 10-15 years old that would like to volunteer with a parent or guardian can learn more about our Youth Program by reaching out to our Volunteer Coordinator.
Volunteers are asked to commit to 4 hours each month in order to stay up-to-date on training and procedures. Volunteers sign up for shifts using an online scheduling software, which makes it easy to choose the days and times that work best for their schedule. Volunteers can sign up for shifts weeks in advance or the same day!
